Mars has earned the name “Red Planet”, because of it’s deep reddish hue caused by oxidation and rust of the iron minerals in it’s soil. Mars can easily be seen by the naked eye. The ancient Romans once worshiped Mars as their God of War, honoring him with festivals and ceremonies in connection with their military campaigns.
As the fourth planet from the Sun, Mars has always been recognized for its barren, scarred, and desert-like landscape. Some scientists have even theorized the scarring of the surface of Mars resembles what the result of a nuclear war would look like.
Astrologically, Mars represents action, the dynamic energy needed to begin any endeavor. As the planet of war Mars is the energy needed for battle, the fuel for the fire, and the burning desire to push forward. Mars energy can often be considered quick and violent, like an uncontrollable wildfire. It’s an explosive energy that can be destructive at times. However, Martian energy also represents the Will power needed to overcome tribulation. A well aspected Mars in one’s chart takes the basis of desire and evolves it into a more mature willful energy.
The initial spark, which stems from the Mars energy, is the point at which we begin any journey, it is the first step of the adventure.
